Please, tell me more about the ASISTUR Cuban Medical Insurance?

As of May 1, 2010, all island visitors are required to have travel medical insurance in place prior to arrival. Emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, and repatriation should be included in your travel health insurance policy to be accepted in Cuba. Coverage for COVID-19 testing, treatment, and protocols must meet Cuba travel regulations.

If, for any reason, you couldn’t obtain travel medical insurance in advance, or the travel medical insurance you purchased does not satisfy Cuba’s medical coverage requirements, the Cuban border workers will ask you to purchase the official Cuban travel medical insurance provided by ASISTUR SA at the point of entry as a condition for admission to the island.

It is important to keep in mind that foreign visitors will not be allowed to leave Cuba whenever medical bills and medical expenses are outstanding.

ASISTUR SA is a Cuban broker that sells travel medical insurance policies provided by local Cuba’s state insurance company ESICUBA (Seguros Internacionales de Cuba SA). ASISTUR SA has offices in all major Cuban ports of entry and tourist destinations and represents hundreds of international insurance and assistance companies in the island.

One major advantage of being covered by the ASISTUR SA medical insurance policy is the expedience of receiving medical services while in Cuba. If a situation arises where you need medical attention (treatment, hospitalization, etc.), you simply call ASISTUR SA assistance number, provide your policy number and it is all directly settled with Cuban institutions without having to make an international telephone call to an international insurance provider to talk to the Cuban medical service providers that are assisting you. Emergency response is available 24 hours a day. ASISTUR coordinates services with many major medical and insurance companies globally.

Most US airlines include the cost of the ASISTUR SA Cuban health insurance policy provided by ESICUBA in the cost of your ticket (usually your boarding pass serves as proof of insurance). Please, double check with your airline about this requirement.

Most Canadian airlines offer the ASISTUR SA Cuban health insurance coverage as an add-on after booking a flight. The coverage may include medical treatment, trip cancellation or interruption, baggage loss, and other travel-related risks.

Canadians can also purchase comprehensive travel and medical insurance coverage for a variety of insurance providers such as Manulife, Insubuy, IMG Global, RBC Insurance and others.

If Asistur Cuban Medical Insurance is not included by your air carrier, please contact us to secure it through us at an additional cost.

The travel medical insurance policies by ASISTUR SA come at different price options (top tier plans are usually around $4.50 USD per day per traveler). There’s a supplement of $3.00 USD for travelers over 70 years old or for those that will engage in high risk activities (scuba diving, caving, rock climbing, mountain climbing, etc.) while in Cuba.

It is important you make your claims to ASISTUR SA Office in Havana before you leave the country.
