Has Cuba restored electricity to most of Havana following a series of blackouts?
Following a series of power outages, Cuba has successfully restored electricity to 95% (the majority) of Havana as of October 22, 2024. The country's power-grid operator announced this development on Monday, despite Tropical Storm Oscar impacting the eastern part of the island, resulting in downed trees and powerlines.
Vicente de la O Levy, the Minister of Energy and Mines stated that technicians are proceeding with caution to prevent another electrical failure due to the "complex" conditions brought on by Tropical Storm Oscar, particularly in Eastern Cuba.
The region experienced strong winds and over 254 millimeters of rainfall in some areas, leading to landslides, flash floods, and isolation of remote locations. "Our primary concern is to avoid a system collapse due to a fallen power line," de la O Levy emphasized.
