Has power been restored to 100% of the hotels and tourist areas?

According to the Cuba Tourist Board, electricity has been restored to 100% of the hotels in Cuba as of October 22, 2024, and all tourist areas are operating as usual. Following a disruption in the national grid on Friday, October 18th, 2024, extensive efforts were made around the clock. By the afternoon of Monday, October 21st, the national electric system was reconnected, and by the end of October 22nd, the entire grid was successfully stabilized, allowing all hotels in the main tourist areas to regain power.

The Director of the Cuba Tourist Board in Toronto, Lessner Gomez, stated, “We have reports, directly from the destination, that the hotels are fully operational across the country, all facilities and services are back to normal, our clients are enjoying their regular tourist activities and it’s business as usual.”

Despite the negative portrayal of the situation in several media outlets, the Cuba Tourist Board emphasizes that most tourist facilities are equipped with their own generators. The Ministry of Tourism, along with local tour operators, hotel management, and staff, worked diligently to minimize the impact of the outage.

All 10 international airports were operational and conducted their scheduled flights without any issues, with electricity and fuel services available to ensure smooth air operations. This reliability is also expected to continue into the upcoming winter season of 2024-2025.

Additionally, the Cuba Tourist Board noted that tropical storm Oscar did not impact any hotels or tourist infrastructure in Holguin, as it passed through Guantanamo province, which lacks major resorts.

Mr. Gomez remarked, “Canadians, for decades have visited Cuba, not only for its pristine beaches and warm weather, but also for the warmth and hospitality of the Cuban people, for its safety and the rich local culture, but it is the strong friendships with Cubans that keeps them coming back.”

He further invited Canadians to trust the efforts being made, stating, “So, for this coming winter season I would like to invite Canadians to trust us as we are working very hard to deliver quality service and an elevated holiday experience.”
